The Abundance

October 4, 2025

Hello Beautiful Human,

Before I jump into talking about “abundance,” I want to first address scarcity. Nonprofits have a reputation for having a “scarcity mindset.” Sometimes it feels like a scolding.

“Yeah, I’d love to have an ‘abundance mindset,’ but have you seen my W2?”

Even if you are a positive person, there is tangible evidence that funding is down and the economy is shrinking. It’s annoying to have someone from outside the sector tell you to stop worrying.

It feels disingenuous to force ourselves to “feel” abundant. I get it.

You can tell yourself all day, “I am abundant,” but if your gut feels the fear of not making rent or having to reduce your staff by the end of the month, you only create more of a disconnect between your body and head.

Our nervous system response is more powerful and drives more of our results than we give it credit for.

Nervous system responses come from our epigenetics, early childhood environment, current environment, hormones, and brain chemistry. Unless we are actively working with our nervous system (which is part of holistic coaching), our responses kind of just happen.

So if you tend to feel scarcity, you can stop scolding yourself. And with compassion, get curious.

You don’t have to ignore reality in order to foster an abundant mindset.

We simply need to expand our perspective beyond the evidence that feeds our sense of scarcity.

This week, a client expressed how challenging raising funds in this environment felt, and in the same breath shared a story about how one of their funder sent a note extending the grant without solicitation.

Our protective brain focuses on how it will be hard, but it can also be easy.

We have been taught to think of riches only in dollars and cents, but if you are in the social sector, you know that value extends far beyond the balance sheet.

In what ways are your needs cared for? In what ways do you already have what you desire?

We are rich in:

  • Relationships
  • Hope
  • Education
  • Knowledge
  • Satisfaction
  • Meaning
  • Joy
  • … (and so much more)

In pausing to think about the abundance that is already here, our body can feel the truth of our riches.

Health, air in your lungs, community that cares about you, a beautiful sunrise…

Allow yourself to feel abundance.

It is from this emotional state that inspiration enters.

We can begin to think: Maybe I should reach out to so and so… Maybe I should take that action even though I don’t know the outcome… Maybe I should ask that person for help.

From a place of knowing how valuable and cared for you are, taking action feels easeful and empowered.

These inspired actions are what will ultimately create more abundance.

I hope this helps you ease your nervous system into seeing the abundance around you. You don’t have to lie to yourself when you are feeling scarcity, simply shift your gaze so you can see the opportunities around you.

I am so grateful for you.
