Issue 102
The Choice
When you think about making decisions, what comes up for you?
Improving your decision making skills requires more than rationally thinking through pros and cons and tying it to a bigger purpose.
Although that is a useful process. We are less rational than we like to think.
Emotions are always at play.
Do you feel excited to choose or overwhelmed?
Do you protect yourself from the fear of getting it wrong by saying you don’t have a choice to begin with?
This is totally natural. And more people than not, live in this realm.
Without a growing sense of confidence that we can handle whatever comes from the choice, we relegate that power to someone or something else.
The irony is that we still end up having to deal with whatever comes, we just feel less empowered and more frustrated because we gave up our autonomy by believing we didn’t have a choice.
Everyday I invite others (and myself) to question the idea that we don’t have a choice.
You actually don’t have to cook dinner.
You don’t have to show up on time.
You don’t have to brush your teeth.
But you may WANT to do these things, and if so, what energy and mindset do you want to bring the task?
Example:
I have to pick my kid up from school. Everyone would agree. However… I could let him wait. I could ask another parent to help. I could move him to a school with a bus… there are lots of options.
But I actually like my choice to pick him up. And in this moment of reflection, I get to choose the energy I bring to the task.
I want to let him know how thrilled I am to have him in my life. I want to create a calm and welcoming space, a safe haven from the chaos of middle school.
This mind exercise puts power back in my hands.
So remember, You always have a choice. Even if it is simply choosing the way you think and feel about a task.
Developing the practice of loving your choices and improving complex decision making is a skillset that will transform your life and wellness.
Sitting in resentment and disempowerment drains your energy day in and day out.
There’s a better way. Book a discovery to begin developing the mental fitness that creates more joy and ease.
