The Scarcity Con
Hello Beautiful Human –
What if, what you desire is already available?
Our logical brains want to retort back with a loud, Nope. There are definitely things I want that are not happening… i.e. no war, no detention or deportations, no violence, and plenty of other daily irritations you may be wishing away.
But let us expand our minds for a moment with curiosity.
There is cognitive research that shows, what our mind gives value to and what we believe is what we see. Our brain LOVES to be right, it feels good and satisfying, so it will happily filter any evidence to the contrary of our belief, (even if we don’t like what we believe).
Given this aspect of our cognitive function, we have the option of biasing our brain towards what we desire to create, and in the process it will function to make that desired reality true.
So back to the question… What if what we desire is already available?
If you KNEW that what you wanted was just behind a week of effort and in the meantime you would be cared for, how much energy would you have for the tasks versus if you believe that nothing you do will be enough and there is no guarantee that it will be worth it?
Our internal energy is renewed or depleted by our belief.
Baked into American, Western colonial mindset is the belief in scarcity. Some of you may be thinking, that’s not a belief, it’s a reality. It’s baked into our economic system and worldview but is NOT the only way of seeing.
Indigenous wisdom speaks to a different way of viewing the Earth.
Robin Wall Kimmer’s new book, The Serviceberry- Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World speaks to a different approach to the economy – a gift economy, which indigenous communities around the world know and practice.
I first learned of the gift economy through the book, Sacred Economics by Charles Eisenstein. Charles’s work speaks not only to the symbiotic and mutually beneficial relationship we can have with nature and each other as Robin does; He dig into the financial, mathematical, and philosophical nature of the economy. Presenting a real case for moving in that direction. It’s a hopeful counter note to the current experience of late stage capitalism here in the USA.
Library Book: The Serviceberry by Robin Wall Kimmer
Sacred Economics by Charles Eisenstein
I mention these two books as a way of expand your thinking.
When I first read about natural symbiotic relationships in Robin Wall Kimmerer first book, Braiding Sweetgrass, something in me recognized it as a great truth that had been kept from me — buried beneath the mindset of competition and scarcity that capitalism thrives on.
There is a process of unlearning, rethinking, and rewiring we can access order to experience the abundance that we are already surrounded by.
When we allow our brain and body to feel abundant we are able to access more resources to create the future we desire.
This internal shift is essential for change agents working for a more just and equitable world.
