Liberation from Perfectionism
Hello Beautiful Human,
Contrary to what you may believe or have been told, perfectionism is not a personality trait, nor is it a commitment to excellence.
Perfectionism is a chronic fear response.
It’s a response that leaves you with the side effects of exhaustion, defensiveness, and the inability to tap into your full potential.
One of the biggest transformations I’ve experienced in the past decade is actually believing this.
Beyond a rational understanding I’ve worked on how I speak to myself, my nervous system response, and creating internal safety to enjoy being an imperfect human.
Personally feeling the liberation from perfectionism has 10x (or more) my impact, productivity, and ability to connect with other.
It’s one thing to know this rationally. It’s another to feel it in your body. This is where a holistic nervous system and somatic approach is so powerful.
Perfectionism is a trait of the dominant white supremacy culture. We all live and breathe the normalization of anxiety over making a mistake.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Doing the inner work to heal and find empowerment in your humanness is restorative, liberation work.
It’s good for your mental health, your justice focused organization, and society at large.
To quote Encanto: “What could I do if I didn’t have to be perfect, I just needed to be and I let that be?”
The answer… it’s a lot. We can do a whole lot more when we are free from perfectionism.
Reflect:
-
What would you do if you knew you didn’t need to do it perfectly?
As we continue to march, organize, advocate, imagine and build a better world, may we do it with a generous spirit, free from the pressure to do it perfectly.
I teach the internal leadership skills necessary to build resilience, create & contribute to healthy organizational cultures, and stay physically well.
Imperfectly, Sonya
