The Duality
Hello Beautiful Human – How are you?
The more I embrace the complexity of life and social change, the more freedom and focus I generate mentally and emotionally.
Much of society pushes us toward either/or options:
“It’s either all good or all bad.”
“If the way isn’t clear, I shouldn’t take any steps.”
The impact of either/or thinking? Division. Repression. Stuckness. Fear.
But when we shift to both/and thinking, we open the mental and emotional door to win/win solutions, authenticity, movement, and creativity.
It’s not always easy.
It can be hard to see beyond the grief and anger.
This past week I’ve been grappling with the breakdown of Civil Rights in the United States AND supporting myself by remembering the resilience, creativity, and power of activists, change agents, and the good of humanity.
By embracing the duality of this moment, I can acknowledge grief AND create space for joy, creativity, and laughter.
When I allow all my emotions to co-exist, I end up experiencing much more peace than when I try to banish the bad. My daily experiences are colored with the richness of being present.
When you commit to finding joy, it will find you. I was tempted to stay home after a long Monday. But I KNOW in my bones that community and movement is the medicine I need. So I put on my shoes and, of course, did not regret my decision.
It’s September 2025 — Hispanic Heritage Month is underway.
Despite the executive order banning it on a federal level, nothing will stop our community from celebrating who we are, the contributions we make, and the future we are creating.
As the budget for cruelty and injustice balloons, so does the number of young Latinos eligible to vote and learning their rights.
Navigating this duality — mentally and emotionally — isn’t just helpful. It’s the essential skill set for empathetic leaders right now.
It is a skills and a practice that will enable us to experience the health and clarity necessary to build the future we desire.
