The Affect
The mood you bring into the room matters.
It’s intangible, but most likely the most powerful leadership skill you can cultivate.
Affect (v.) : to produce an effect upon (someone or something).
Our emotional affect can transfer hope, creativity, and empowerment the inspires innovation and an regenerative energy.
But it can also suck the air out of the room, generate fear, anxiety, and the urgency that makes people feel like they are doing a lot but in fact just spinning their wheels.
Effective Leaders cultivate the mental fitness, emotional capacity, and embodied awareness to take responsibility for their affect.
Leaders attuned to their affect spend less time in frustration and more time bringing people together to accomplish great things.
I used to think some people had this ability and others didn’t. It was an inherent skill, a “mysterious leadership quality” that too many leadership booked referred to as personality.
But with knowledge + awareness + practice this embodied quality can be developed.
Combining Interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), culturally rooted and trauma informed leadership development – you don’t have to feel stuck and can start developing emotional mastery.
Reflection Questions:
What are the primary influences on your mood?
- How do you feel when you’re Tired? Hungry? Needing movement?
- What’s on repeat in your head? Is it empowering or negative?
What is your go-to mood shifter?
Do you absorb the mood in a room or help guide it?
