What’s IN and OUT of your control?
Hello Beautiful Human –
The simple question of identifying what is IN and what is OUT of your control unlocks incredible focus and power.
It is essential.
We could coach weekly just on this one topic – noticing where you are giving your power way and where you could take responsibility. And it would complete transform your life.
Humans have incredible agency. Our desire to create, build, direct, and connect is insatiable. It is not a problem.

It is honestly what drives human civilization forward, but along the way in our desire to improve, to fix, to master, our brain can get confused on what and how we actually have control.
Dominance and violence is one form of control. But it only creates fear and disconnection, within ourselves and society.
Side note: As a boy mom, I am saddened that society teaches young men that control of others is what is means to be a man and an ok way to navigate the uncontrollable changing world. I have no doubt this is contributing to male loneliness and additional issues we face today.
Self Mastery and Emotional Regulation is a far more effective and challenging form of control that actually leads to empowerment, inspiration and the possibility for mutual thriving.
Self mastery includes sorting out what we actually have control over and directing our energy and focus on those things.
Emotional regulation enables us to own our reaction to the things outside of our control and powerful choose our response.
Even though the world feels very heavy with many things out of our control, we have the opportunity to focus our attention on that which is in our power and create incredible change with focus and commitment.
When you feel helpless and overwhelmed by an uncontrollable world, remember your power. Your voice is valuable. Your care is felt. Your creativity is needed.
After shoveling a giant ICE OUT message in the southern part of Lake Nokomis last night, people gathered tonight to light luminaries so that the message can be viewed by planes arriving and departing from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport nearby.
The more people who remember what is in their control and take action the easier it is for others with different skills and resources to take action too.
Our local radio station, the Currant is highlighting musicians using their voice to speak out against ICE.
I’d love to know, how are you focusing your attention on what’s in your control today?
Be well, Sonya
P.S. Taking care of your own nervous system is a very important thing within your control. Go for walk, pet an animal, light a cancel, listen to some calming music. You are worthy of care.
