Leadership Inside Out

More Energy Please…

July 12, 2024

How are you? What’s on your to do plate?

The one thing I often hear among leaders is the need for more energy. You too?

One obvious way to get more energy is to rest… a simple solution is sometimes the best, but as I wrote about last week, it is not always easy.

And even if you DO take that nap or vacation, sometimes it’s not enough.

The moment you return and open your computer to work, it’s like your internal battery drains immediately. ‘WTF – I felt rested 5 minutes ago.’

I remember having an old phone with the same problem. I had to carry a charging cord around in my purse, always searching for a plug to get my phone to do the most basic functions.

Do you feel like an old phone that loses its charge one hour after getting unplugged from the power source?

Are you at the point where no amount of walks around the block, messages, or time in your garden is giving you sustainable energy? I hear ya.

I don’t want to leave you drained, feeling like the only option is scrolling on social media or binging Netflix.

It’s time for an ENERGY ASSESSMENT.

As leaders we primarily gain, use, and lose energy primarily through our mental and emotional processing.

What thoughts and emotions do you hold and nurture?

  • Do you feel like the challenge you are facing is hopeless?
  • Do you think that you lack the capacity, time or knowhow to make a difference?
  • Do you feel disappointed or fearful of the outcome before you even get started?

These are energy sucking thoughts and emotions. They are like those energy vampire apps that kill your phone battery and you aren’t even aware they are operating.

Bringing awareness to the energy sucking thoughts running in the background is the fastest way to gain control of your energy flow.

Do an honest thought download. Seriously pull out a piece of paper and start writing.

What emotions do you feel when you think those thoughts?

With an energy assessment in hand you can unsubscribe, reframe and update the thoughts and emotions you bring to your work.

Reflection Questions:

  • You don’t have to believe everything you initially think.
  • Your mind and emotions are POWERFUL. Allow them to fuel your energy instead of drain it.

You are far more powerful than you know when it comes to creating sustainable energy for yourself. Get yourself plugged into the mental, emotional, and embodied practices to fuel your dreams. Adelante.

Be well, Sonya
