Is bias a good thing?!

March 22, 2025

How are you feeling?

My goal with every email I write is to share a tidbit of information for you to feel more empowered, energized, and encouraged to create the internal changes you desire.

Today we’re talking about BIAS. And it’s not all bad. It’s just kind of how our brain works.

If the sun happens to be shining and your body has gotten enough rest, than I’m gonna guess you have a higher tolerance for irritation and inconvenience. Your mood has biased your mind toward the positive.

However, if it’s gloomy outside and you had an disagreement with your people then your mind is on alert for all threat and irritation. You feel like everything is garbage and our mind then goes to find evidence of your belief.

We FEEL a certain way and then our rational brain jumps in to verify.

There is a lot of information to sort through, so in order to save energy and time our brain cherrypicks the ideas that confirm our emotions and moves on as if it is fact.

Knowing this about your brain can help you PAUSE and NOTICE when you are creating a negative feedback loop in your body and mind.

For example, if you feel disrespected at work or home then you subconsciously start collecting evidence. When they didn’t say ‘thank you’ your brain tags it as proof, and you fail to see that they are lost in their own worries and their lack of communication isn’t even about you.

The collected proof then fuels the negative feeling and starts the cycle again.

Here’s the secret: In working WITH your brain, you can bias it towards more of what what want. SERIOUSLY.

We can access more joy, more energy, more positive results by directing our brain. I call it, mental fitness.

Every morning I bias my brain. When I open my eyes I put on one of these thoughts:

  • Today’s a great day to have a great day.
  • Today’s gonna be a good day.
  • It’s a happy day.
  • I have capacity to get done what needs to be done.

My brain then goes to work collecting evidence.

Running my son’s trumpet to the bus stop becomes a great way to get my steps in and heart rate up. I feel grateful that I could help him. I ease into my day with energy instead of frustration over his forgetfulness. Later my son and I set up a system so it doesn’t become routine. I can also work on setting up a system to get my daily movement in without needing a dash to the bus stop.

Awareness is the 3rd step in my C.H.A.N.G.E process I use with clients. Together we work WITH your brain to create more energy, empowerment, and joy.

Reflection Questions:

  • What direction are your thoughts bias towards?
  • What if you didn’t judge or shame yourself, but simply noticed and started to shift your thinking?

Biases & Cultural Norms

It’s important to remember that we don’t choose which biases we are surrounded by in society and which ones our brain tags as “normal”. Which is why education, conscious awareness, and curiosity is essential for society to grow and change.

What are the cultural elements in our society that are keeping us stuck in this place of gross injustice, limiting human potential and actively harming ourselves?

I’ve spent decades exploring this question, deep and wide, and invite you to take a personal look at the work of Tema Okun’s tenants of white supremacy culture (WSC).

Disrupting our bias towards perfectionism, urgency, either or thinking and the other 14 characteristics of wsc is a practice and in the process we liberate ourselves and our community.
