Leadership Inside Out

Issue 73

The cost of pushing through

March 29, 2025

Hello Beautiful Human-

How are you feeling? Exhausted?

I’m gonna guess you have the work ethic and commitment to just push through. Drink another coffee. Clock another late night.

You let the urgency drive you. Unfamiliar with breaks. Only accustom to collapse.

You are not alone.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

In fact, I want to offer a better way to tackle the mountain of responsibilities and the heavy mental load you carry. Let’s tap into a restorative energy.

The energy that comes from anxiety and urgency only gets you so far.

In neuroscience words, it’s the sympathetic nervous system that creates a cocktail of stress hormones – cortisol and adrenaline that eventually break down your immune system, limits your mental capacity, and reduces your ability to work with ease.

You may be wondering, “ok, but how then can I get anything done without pushing through in this stress mode?!”

My invitation: Slow down and tap into a different source of energy and higher level thinking.

You brain and body needs REST. With rest comes more mental, emotional, and physical capacity. It’s strategic leadership.

Taking time to access your parasympathetic nervous system (also known as the state of rest and digest) helps your body and mind heal, grow, and foster healthy relationships.

Five ways to a PARAsympathetic response: (Para in Spanish is a command to stop)

  • Breath Slowly & Deeply (5 minutes before you go into work, 60 seconds between meetings… any amount helps).
  • Drink water
  • Go for a walk in nature
  • Stretch
  • Snuggle with a pet or loved one

What ways do you use unplug from the adrenaline of pushing through?

In a society that yells, “DO MORE NOW”, we need leaders who have a practice of being thoughtful, doing meaningful work in sustainable energy.

We get to decide what voice we listen to and how we want to go about our work.

As one client reflected so brilliantly, “There are no gold stars for not taking care of myself.”

The knowledge, awareness, and practice of rewiring our relationship with works is what I do with coaching clients.

We go beyond the head knowledge and work to embody practices that create sustainable energy for the incredibly important responsibilities in your life.

From a place of ease and joy you can make an impact without the collapse and exhaustion. Your body, brain, and teammates will thank you, I promise. Because when we slow down everything actually does improve.

Reflection Questions:

  • How often do I consciously pause and activate my parasympathetic nervous system?
  • Do I see my wellness practices as essential to my leadership performance?
  • What do I want to commit to this week to fuel my body and mind?

Do you feel guilty taking care of your own needs? Do you struggle to find time for rest? This class is for you.
