The opposite of fear
Caring about the rights and wellbeing of the most vulnerable is an essential quality in leadership. However, for those with a deeply empathetic nature, it can be challenging not to be overwhelmed by worry and fear. This is why it is so important for leaders to continually remind us, “We will not live in fear.” Each time I hear this, it resonates as a truth I choose to live by.

But what does not living in fear REALLY look like? What does it feel like? What does it mean day to day to not live in fear?
Taking time to get curious helps bring this motivational statement into our behavior and embodied way of being.
What does courage feel when I open my email or social media?
What does it look like when I gather my team and they are all coming in with their own fears and concerns?
What does courage do when you’re rushing to pick up your kids but want to cry from the overwhelm happening at work and the world?
- Courage feels like naming the emotion and promising yourself you will address it and not ignore it – forcing it to explode on others or eat away at yourself.
- Courage is creating space in your calendar to reflect and process what’s going on.
- Courage is being willing to stay emotionally regulated, curious and compassionate with those who are struggling around you.
- Courage is making space for laughter and long hugs even when heart broken.
- Courage is reminding yourself you are capable when self doubt start to creep in.
What else feels like courage to you?
Fear induced leadership is not leadership, it is control and dominance. You may not intend to be controlling or dominant but unaddressed fear within leadership always is a reckless force that creates chaos and confusion.
With practice I have become more aware of when this happens in my home and business and compassionately work to shift away from fear.
Fear limits human potential – within yourself and the people you are trying to lead.
Reflection Questions:
- Do you have the courage to lead yourself and your community differently?
- How will you cultivate courage in the face of real fear?
I am constantly in this pursuit of unlocking human potential – in myself and others. By understanding our nervous system, emotions, and internal narratives we CAN move from fear to courage.
I am certain that integrating the words, “We will not live in fear” from head knowledge into an embodied practice will create empowered leaders that change themselves, their community, and the world.
Who is this for? …YOU!
yes, dear reader, you:
- If you’ve been getting my emails but we haven’t actually met face to face.
- If we’ve talked before, it’s time for another, hello.
- If we’ve worked together in the past, I’d love to catch up.

This week I found myself incredibly encouraged and inspired by a conversation with author Kazu Haga. If you are interested in creating sustainable change for ourselves and society rooted in belonging and mutual wellbeing I invite you to take a listen.
Near the end at 1.19 The song shared by my friend Liz has been carrying me through. Enjoy!
