Leadership Inside Out

Issue 90

You’re not the only one struggling with this

July 26, 2025

Hello Beautiful Human,

First, I want to say, I love you for dreaming of a better future. You dedicate yourself to justice, love, and making the world better with your unique skills and passion.

The dream keeps you going… or is it the coffee and adrenaline of not wanting to let other people down?

Somewhere between the moment of aligned vision and actually executing the necessary tasks, your confidence turned to anxiety. You’re not alone.

You know you need to open that budget document or call that donor, but your stomach tightens – and all of a sudden you decide that supporting your staff with picking up groceries for an event, connecting with people on LinkedIN (i.e. scrolling), or cleaning the toilet is much more important.

You tell yourself, “This is servant leadership. I’m supposed to wear all the hats and do ALL the things”. But you have a nagging feeling that you aren’t being as effective as you could be. Frustration at the lack of real progress towards the vision grows.

But you can’t seem to get over the nausea that shows up every time you think about what is truly needed. You might not even be aware of how the stress in your mind is causing physical symptoms in your body.

The fear of what you’ll find when you start working the numbers – or what you need to say in that vulnerable conversation puts you into freeze mode. You know what you ‘should’ do but you can’t; then guilt over not doing the thing just adds to your exhaustion.

You lie to yourself and say, “I’m not scared. I’m just too tired to do it today.”

You find yourself emotionally swimming in frustration, fear, and guilt. It’s the ultimate energy drain. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ENERGIZING DREAM?

You push through on less important tasks, hoping that it will make you feel productive enough to take a break so you can find the energy to do the really important work. But more energy never comes from running yourself ragged. You need a different strategy to get the work done and to have energy left over.

I get what’s happening in your brain and body. I’ve been there too.

I also have the neuroscience, human behavior, and coaching knowledge to help you out of this vicious and all-too-common cycle.

This week my coach hosted a celebration call. I didn’t feel like celebrating; I am not immune to the frustration, fear, guilt cycle. But I went anyway and in celebrating found the mindset and emotional shift that opened a floodgate of energy.

Sitting with someone to help map your progress, celebrate and face your fears is INVALUABLE. Human brains and emotions are complex and powerful – and can be trained like an Olympic athlete. It is the one thing 100% within your control.

When we stay connected with the big dream and bravely take daily steps toward it, energy multiplies. This is what I desire for you, dear change agent.

Now’s the perfect time to explore my holistic support to improve your life and leadership.

Reflection Prompts

  • What one thing can you do TODAY to move you in the direction of your dream? Are you staying busy to avoid it?
  • What steps have you taken that you need to acknowledge and celebrate?
  • How is your physical wellbeing impacting your leadership and visa versa?
