Leadership Inside Out

Issue 92

Some unorthodox Leadership Development

August 9, 2025

Hello Beautiful Human,

Disrupting the status quo of controlling, fear-based, hierarchical approaches to leadership is more than a dream. It becomes a reality through conscious, creative, and embodied leadership practices.

It’s one thing to desire something … it’s another to commit to the habits, skills, and beliefs that make your dream a reality.

There is no denying that change agents are experiencing a lot of fear in the uncertainty, and the desire to control things in the instability that is being amplified in our world. With all that’s going on it’s easier psychologically to abdicate our power and blame those “higher up” than it is to find our empowerment and take action. Fear, control, and overwhelm are the less than pretty but natural things to show up in times of stress.

Muscling through and fighting harder may be what some call for.

But I want to offer a more elegant, effective, and sustainable solution in the long-run: Building the skills of mindfulness, emotional processing, and embodied care.

It is in developing these inner practices where we find energy, creativity, and motivation to continue to create the change we desire to see in the world.

Last night I hosted an informal gathering of leaders to, “Paint flowers in my yard”. It was part of my unorthodox approach to leadership development. I know it’s really hard to lead with confidence and clarity when you are mentally drained, emotionally exhausted, and your nervous system is strung out on stress and anxiety.

So we breathed.
We set down the to-dos.
We tapped into creativity and rest.

Thriving doesn’t just happen. It is a skill and a practice. Learn the frameworks, mindsets, and routines that will transform how you navigate any season of change.

I remember when I first learned I could earn a masters degree in “change management”, I was like, “WHAT WE COULD BE DOING CHANGE BETTER?!” And although I had enough of school, I had to know learn this and bring it back to nonprofit sector. Hence the MSLOC (master of science in Learning & Organizational Change) behind my name.

A decade later, I’m still using some of the frameworks I learned and have added a neuroscience and embodied approach to creating transformation that unlocks human potential. Register now.

Be well, Sonya
